Soil Factors (Risk to Ground Water)

Dominant soil type (0 - 5 feet deep).

Very fine - textured soils (clays).

Fine - textured soils (clay loams, silty clays).

Medium - textured soils (silty loams, loams).

Coarse - textured soils (sands, loamy sands).

Soil depth.

Deep (over 40 inches deep).

Moderately deep

(20 - 40 inches deep).

Shallow

(10 - 20 inches deep).

Very shallow

(under 10 inches deep.)

Depth to ground water

More than 50 feet to the water table.

Water table is 20 to 50 feet deep.

Water table is 10 to 20 feet deep.

Water table is less than 10 feet deep.

Soil organic matter content (use only with Worksheet #2: Pesticide Handling).

Soil contains over 2.5% organic matter.

Soil contains 1.5% to 2.5% organic matter.

Soil contains 1.0% to 1.5% organic matter.

Soil contains less than 1.0% organic matter.

Subsurface (Geology) Factors

Fractured bedrock (structure).

No fractured bedrock

Fractured bedrock overlayen by at least 20 feet of fine clay.

Fractured bedrock overlayen by 10 - 20 feet of clay.

Fractured bedrock overlayen by less than 10 feet of clay.

Texture

Dense or fine textured, unsorted silt, clay or shale at depth greater than 45 feet.

Meduim textured soils at depths greater than 45 feet.

Coarse textured, uncon - solodated materials from 30 to 45 feet.

Sands or gravels, regardless of depth.

Other Ground Water Risk Factors

Backflow prevention

Anti - backflow devices (such as check valves) installed on all faucets with hose connections. No cross - connections between water supplies.

Anti - backflow devices installed on some faucets with hose connections.

No anti - backflow devices. Air gap maintained.

No anti - backflow devices. Air gap not maintained. Cross - connections between water supplies.

Unused well

No unused, unsealed wells.

Unused wells capped and protected.

Unused, unsealed well in field. Not capped or protected.

Unused, unsealed well in farmstead. Not capped or protected.

Water testing

Consistent satisfactory water quality. Bacteria, nitrate and other tests meet standards.

Occasional deviation from standards with bacteria, nitrate and other tests.

Bacteria, nitrate and other tests mostly do not meet standards.

No water tests done. Water discolored after rainstorms or during spring melt. Noticeable changes in color, clarity, odor or taste.

Risk Factors to Surface Water

Soil texture

coarse - textured soils(sands, loamy sands).

Medium - textured soils (silt loams, loams).

Fine - textured soils (clay loams and silt loams) with high organic matter content).

Very fine - textured soils (clays) with low organic content.

Slope

Flat (0-2%)

Moderately flat (2-6%)

Moderate (7-12%)

Steep (greater than 12%)

Conservation measures applied (BMP's)

All recom - mended BMP's applied.

At least 1 BMP appled to field.

BMP's planned but not applied.

No BMP's planned or applied.
