Back to Pest Management
Directions: For each category listed on the
left that is appropriate to your farm, read across to the right
and circle the statement that best describes your management.
(Skip or leave blank any categories that don't apply to your
cropland pest management.)

Soil Organic Matter and Structure
Soil is high in organic matter. (4-8% in fine textured soils, >2% in coarse textured soils)
Soil is crumbly, loose, and well-aerated.
Soil organic matter is at moderate level (3-4% in fine textured soils, 1.5-2% in coarse textured soils)
Soil has good structure and not compacted.
Soil organic matter is low. (2-3% in fine textured soils, 1-1.5% in coarse textured soils)
Soil is lumpy, tight, or slightly compacted.
Topsoil has little or no organic matter.
Soil is cloddy or dusty, compacted, and poorly aerated.
Soil pH
Soil pH is balanced (6.5-7.2) and regularly adjusted for rotation.
Soil pH is slightly high or low.
Soil pH values are excessively high or low (<6.0 or >8)

SITE SUSCEPT - IBILITY

Surface runoff potential
No matter the soil texture, slopes in field are <2%.
Slopes in field are 2-6% for coarse and medium textured soils (sand, loamy sand, sandy loam, sandy clay loam, silt loam, silt, silty clay loam, loam) EXCEPT for fine textured soils (silty clay, clay, sandy clay)
Slopes in field are 6-12% for coarse and medium textured soils.
Fine textured soils (silty clay, clay, sandy clay) have 2-6% slopes.
Slopes in field are >6% for silty clay, clay, and sandy clay soils,
OR Slopes are >12% for all other soil textures
Leaching potential*
Water table is >30 feet from the surface for fine (silty clay, clay, sandy clay, very fine sandy loam, sandy clay loam) and medium textured soils (loam, silt loam, silty clay loam or clay loam).
Water table is 11-30 feet from the surface for medium and fine textured soils
OR Water table is >30 feet from surface for coarse textured soils (all sands, loamy sands and sandy loam),.
Water table 6-10 feet from the surface for medium and fine textured soils
OR Water table is 11-30 feet from surface for coarse textured soil
Water table is <6 feet from surface for all other soils.
OR Water table is <10 feet from the surface for coarse - textured soils
OR Soil is shallow (<20 inches) above creviced bedrock.
* If your site presents a high risk
because of it's soil, geologic, and hydrologic conditions, treat
all moderately high risks as high risks. (See worksheet #11 for
a more thorough examination of your site conditions)
