Shoal Creek Re-Vegetation Program

The Blackland Research and Extension Center Water Science Laboratory is monitoring sediment losses at 13 sites on Fort Hood. The Shoal Creek Watershed (5028 total acres) is currently having Best Management Practices installed by NRCS that will reduce erosion within this training area to acceptable levels and keep it open for training activities.

Sediment loss data, measured in-stream during storm water runoff events using ISCO 4230 Bubble Flow meters and 3700 Automatic Water Samplers.  We recorded a total loss of  27,913 tons of sediment in 2000. Recorded losses have been less during drought impacted years (9664 tons in 2002), however sediment losses from "normal" rangeland in this area should be less then 0.2 tons per acre per year.
